First they came...

About "Liberandus" and "Sickulars" -

Remember when a political party in Mumbai started a campaign against South Indians in the late '60s? The same thing happened to the North Indians in Mumbai a few years ago. We all know what it lead to.

When people in Mumbai came out in support of their South and North Indian brothers, were they Liberandus/Libtard or Sickulars? Or were they only looking out for their fellow citizens? Someone who speaks up for minorities is labelled a Liberandu or Sickular. As if having liberal and secular ideologies is wrong. These words are not an insult. If you are a migrant living and working in Mumbai, there was a time when the same ideology helped you survive here when you were in trouble. "Liberandus and Sickulars" were the ones supporting you. Minorities will always be bullied - for religion, caste, region or some other stupid reason. Support the minorities! You won't even realise when they will make you one.

This reminds me of a poem Khushwant Singh mentioned it in his book 'The End of India'. Written by a German pastor named Martin Niemöller (1892–1984), it is about the cowardice of German intellectuals and certain clergy—including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself—following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

First, they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me

Mother. India.
